Business Advice & Development

Better numbers. Better-informed business decisions.

Most business owners do not need more reports — they need to understand what the numbers are telling them and what to do next. We help small and medium businesses across Ipswich read their own figures clearly, weigh up the options in front of them, and plan with a bit more confidence.

The service

More than year-end accounting.

Business advice, in our sense of the term, means helping you understand your own financial information well enough to make decisions with it. Which parts of the business are actually making money. What the year is likely to look like if nothing changes. Whether the structure you set up years ago still suits what you are doing today.

It matters because most business problems show up in the numbers well before they show up anywhere else — in a margin that has quietly slipped, a debtor list that keeps stretching out, or a tax bill nobody put money aside for. Seeing those things earlier gives you far more room to respond.

Because we also prepare your financial statements, activity statements and returns, the advice is built on figures we already know. There is no need to explain your business from scratch every time you want to talk something through, and no gap between the compliance work and the conversation about what to do next.

Where we sit alongside your other advisers

We are accountants, auditors and tax agents. Where a decision needs legal, lending or specialist advice, we are happy to work alongside the professionals you already use, so everyone is looking at the same numbers.

Know where you stand

Know where your business stands.

A clear picture of performance is the starting point for every other conversation. That means figures that are current, consistent from period to period, and broken down far enough to be useful — not a single number at the end of the year.

We go through the results with you and talk about what is behind them: where the revenue is coming from, where the costs sit, what has moved since last time, and which of those movements are worth acting on.

  • Reviewing performance across the year, not just at year end
  • Identifying trends and issues while there is still time to act
  • Making the reporting understandable to the people running the business
  • Connecting the numbers to the decisions actually in front of you

What we do

What we can help you with

The areas business owners most often want to work through with us.

Understanding business performance

Working through your results together so the figures mean something — margins, overheads, trends and the movements worth paying attention to.

Financial information for decision-making

Getting the right information in front of you, in a form you can actually use, before a decision is made rather than after.

Business structures

General discussion of sole trader, partnership, company and trust structures, what each involves, and whether your current arrangement still fits.

Budgeting and planning discussions

Putting expectations for the year ahead on paper, then comparing them against what actually happens as the year unfolds.

Cash-flow visibility

Looking at the timing of money in and money out, so obligations such as tax, superannuation and larger purchases do not arrive unannounced.

Tax considerations for the business

Bringing tax into the conversation early, so the effect of a decision is understood before it is made rather than discovered at year end.

Identifying financial issues earlier

Flagging the things that tend to become problems if left — slow debtors, rising costs, thin margins, and obligations building up quietly.

Ongoing accounting support

Somewhere to take a question during the year, rather than saving everything up for the annual appointment.

Our approach

How we work with business owners

Advice is only useful if it fits the business it is given to, so we start by understanding yours.

  1. 01

    Understand the business

What you do, how the money moves through it, who is involved, and what you are hoping the next few years look like.

  2. 02

    Review the financial information

We look at the accounts and records as they stand, and tell you plainly whether they are giving you a reliable picture.

  3. 03

    Work through the numbers together

We go over performance, obligations and pressure points, in ordinary language, until the picture is clear on your side of the table too.

  4. 04

    Talk through the options

Where there is a decision to make, we set out what we can see, what it would mean financially, and what falls outside our remit as accountants.

  5. 05

    Provide ongoing support

We stay involved through the year — during the compliance work and in between it — so the advice keeps pace with the business.

Any advice we provide is general accounting and taxation advice based on the information available to us. We do not provide legal advice, lending, or investment recommendations.

Who we work with

Advice through every stage of business

We work with businesses across Ipswich and the surrounding region, at very different points in their life.

People starting out

Working through structure, registrations and record-keeping before the first invoice goes out.

Sole traders

Owner-operators who want a clearer view of what the business is actually returning them.

Small businesses

Established businesses with staff, stock or equipment, and more moving parts than a spreadsheet handles comfortably.

Family businesses

Businesses where family and commercial considerations sit side by side and both need to be thought about.

Companies, trusts and partnerships

Businesses operating through a structure, where the entity and the people behind it both need attention.

Businesses at a turning point

Growth, a change of premises, a new partner, or simply a year that has not gone to plan.

Looking forward

Planning for what comes next.

Planning does not need to be elaborate to be worthwhile. Often it is a matter of writing down what you expect the year to do, agreeing how you will know whether it is on track, and then actually checking.

We sit down with you to talk about the year ahead — what is committed, what is uncertain, what would need to be true for the plan to work, and what the tax and cash-flow consequences look like along the way. Then we revisit it, because plans made in July rarely survive contact with the rest of the year unchanged.

Worth knowing

Important considerations

Advice is only as good as the records

If the bookkeeping is behind or inconsistent, the first job is usually to get the records current. Everything else is guesswork until then.

Structure changes have consequences

Moving a business from one structure to another can have tax, cost and administrative implications. It is worth working through properly rather than quickly.

We work within our field

We provide accounting and taxation advice. Legal, lending and investment matters sit outside that, and we will say so and point you to the right professional.

No two businesses are the same

What worked for a business down the road may not suit yours. Advice needs to reflect your own circumstances, obligations and appetite for risk.

Information on this page is general in nature and does not take your objectives, financial situation or needs into account. Requirements can depend on your circumstances and current legislation — speak with our team for advice relevant to your situation.

External resources

Useful government resources

Background reading published by Australian government agencies. Handy starting points, though they cannot tell you what suits your business.

These are external government resources, published and maintained by their respective agencies rather than by Bachmann Robinson. Links do not imply a recommendation of their content. For anything specific to your circumstances, speak with our team.

Questions

Common questions about business advice

Do I need to be an existing client to ask for advice?

No. Plenty of people come to us with a specific question first and become clients afterwards. Give us a call and tell us what you are trying to work out.

How often should we be looking at the numbers?

That depends on the business. Some owners want a conversation every quarter alongside their activity statements; others are comfortable with a thorough annual review and a phone call when something comes up. We will suggest a rhythm that matches what is going on.

Can you tell me whether I should change my business structure?

We can talk through how the common structures work, what each involves administratively, and what the tax considerations look like for a business like yours. Any change would need to take your full circumstances into account, and some aspects may also call for legal advice.

My bookkeeping is a mess. Is it too early to talk?

Not at all — that is a very normal starting point. We can help bring the records up to date first, either through our own bookkeeping service or by working with whoever handles it for you.

Do you provide business loans or arrange finance?

No. We do not provide finance or lending advice. We can help you prepare and understand the financial information a lender or another adviser may ask you for.
