The service

A return prepared by someone who knows your situation.

An income tax return reports the income you earned over the financial year and the deductions you are entitled to claim, so the Australian Taxation Office can work out your final position. For some people that means a single income statement and a handful of receipts. For others it takes in rental income, investments, a business, or a combination of entities that all need to line up with one another.

Getting it right matters in both directions. Missing a deduction you were entitled to claim costs you money; claiming something you cannot substantiate creates a problem later. And because the rules are adjusted from year to year, what applied to your return last time will not always apply this time.

We work through your return with you rather than around you — checking what has changed, asking about the things that are easy to forget, and explaining the outcome in plain language before we lodge. If something in your circumstances warrants a closer look, we will say so.

Not sure which return applies to you?

If you run a business through a company, trust or partnership, there is usually more than one return involved — the entity lodges its own, and so do you. Give us a call and we will walk you through what is required.

What we do

What we can help you with

We have vast experience with tax returns, from simple basic returns through to considerably more complicated ones. These are the areas we are asked about most often.

01

Individual tax returns

Salary and wage earners, part-year returns, several employers in one year, allowances, and the work-related deductions that apply to your occupation.

02

Company tax returns

Preparation and lodgement of company returns, reconciled against the financial statements prepared for the same year.

03

Trust and partnership returns

Returns for trusts and partnerships, including distribution statements and the individual returns of the people behind them.

04

Investment income

Interest, dividends, managed fund distributions and capital gains events, together with the records the ATO expects you to hold.

05

Rental properties

Rental income and expenses, apportionment where a property was not available all year, and depreciation where a schedule has been prepared.

06

Defence personnel

Returns for Australian Defence Force members, including the allowances and deductions that commonly come with service life.

07

Deductions relevant to your circumstances

We work through what you may be entitled to claim under the rules in force for the year, and what you will need in order to substantiate it.

08

Record preparation and lodgement

Pulling your documentation into order, preparing the return, and lodging it with the ATO as your registered tax agent.

Every return is different. What you can claim depends on your own circumstances and the legislation in force for that financial year.

Rental property tax

Property income, reported properly.

Rental properties are one of the most common reasons a return stops being straightforward. Income and expenses need to be reported for the right period, in the right proportions, and split correctly between what is claimed now and what is claimed over time.

We work with property investors across Ipswich and the surrounding suburbs — from a first investment property through to holdings inside a trust or company. If you have bought, sold, refinanced or first rented out a property this year, tell us early; those events usually change what the return looks like.

  • Rental income, agent statements and end-of-year summaries
  • Repairs, maintenance and capital works treated appropriately
  • Apportionment where the property was not available for rent all year
  • Depreciation where a schedule has been prepared by a quantity surveyor
  • Capital gains events when a property is sold

Our approach

How we prepare your return

The same considered process, whether your return takes twenty minutes or a good deal longer.

  1. 01

    Understand your situation

We start with what has changed since last year — a new job, a property, an investment, a business, a change at home. It is usually the changes that matter most.

  2. 02

    Review the relevant records

We work through your income statements, receipts, bank and investment statements and any other documentation, and let you know early if something is missing.

  3. 03

    Prepare and assess

We prepare the return, apply the deductions available to you under the current rules, and check it against the information the ATO already holds.

  4. 04

    Discuss the outcome

Before anything is lodged we talk you through the result and what it means, so there are no surprises when the assessment arrives.

  5. 05

    Lodge and follow up

We lodge your return as your registered tax agent, and stay available if the ATO raises a question about it afterwards.

Before we start

What to bring to your appointment

You do not need to arrive with everything in perfect order — sorting out the paperwork is part of what we do. That said, the more you can bring to the first appointment, the fewer follow-ups are needed afterwards.

  • Photo identification if you are a new client
  • Your tax file number and bank account details
  • Income statements, payment summaries and any PAYG details
  • Interest, dividend and managed fund statements
  • Receipts and records for the deductions you intend to claim
  • Rental property statements and any depreciation schedule
  • Private health insurance and spouse details where relevant

Worth knowing

Important considerations

Due dates depend on your circumstances

Lodgement dates differ between individuals, businesses and entities, and can change depending on your lodgement history and whether you lodge through a registered tax agent.

Deductions need to be substantiated

A deduction generally has to relate to earning your income, and you need records to support it. We will tell you where the evidence looks thin.

The rules change

Thresholds, rates and the treatment of particular expenses are adjusted regularly. Something that applied a few years ago may no longer apply today.

Keep your records

The ATO expects you to retain the records supporting your return for a set period after lodgement. We can explain what that means for the claims you have made.

This information is general in nature and does not take your particular circumstances into account. We do not guarantee any tax outcome. Requirements can depend on your circumstances and current legislation — speak with our team for advice relevant to your situation.

Questions

Common questions about tax returns

When is my tax return due?

Individual returns are generally due by 31 October, although lodging through a registered tax agent often allows a later date. Companies, trusts and partnerships work to their own timetable. Requirements can depend on your circumstances and current legislation — speak with our team for advice relevant to your situation.

Do I need an appointment, or can we do it remotely?

Both work. Many clients prefer to come into the Ipswich office and go through everything in person; others send their information through and speak with us by phone. Give us a call and we will arrange whichever suits you.

What if I have several years outstanding?

It is more common than you might think, and it is fixable. Bring what you have and we will work out what is outstanding, which records are needed, and the best order in which to bring things up to date.

Can you handle my business and personal returns together?

Yes. Where a company, trust or partnership is involved, the entity return and the individual returns behind it need to align, so there is a real advantage in having the same firm prepare both.

How do I know what I can claim?

That depends on how you earn your income and what you are able to substantiate. We will ask about your work, your expenses and your circumstances, then apply the rules in force for that financial year. We do not promise a particular refund.

The ATO has queried my return — can you help?

Yes. If a question or review comes up on a return we prepared, we will help you respond and provide the supporting information required.
